A Bathroom Redesigned to Keep Our Customer Safe at Home

When an elderly lady living alone in Marlow needed her bathroom made safer and easier to use, her family contacted The Red Van Plumbers. Having trusted us with their plumbing and heating for many years, they knew we would handle the job with care.

We regularly carry out bathroom installations for elderly and vulnerable homeowners and care environments across South East England, so we understood exactly what was needed from the start. We transformed her existing bathroom into a safe, accessible space with a walk-in shower installation, giving her the confidence to stay comfortable and independent at home.

The Challenge

The existing bathroom had a standard bath that had become difficult and unsafe to use independently. For an elderly or vulnerable person living alone, that creates a real daily risk. The aim was clear. Design and install a bathroom that would allow her to stay safe, comfortable and independent at home for longer. The solution needed to be practical, but it also needed to feel like a proper, well-finished space rather than a clinical adaptation.

The Bathroom Conversion

The bath, basin, WC and existing tiling were all removed to make way for a safer and more practical layout.

Walk-In Shower Installation for Elderly User

We installed a JT Fusion anti-slip shower tray measuring 800mm x 1500mm, providing a low-level and secure entry point. A Mira Excel thermostatic shower was fitted with a sliding rail, hose and flexible head. Thermostatic control is essential in this type of installation as it prevents sudden temperature changes, which is particularly important for elderly and vulnerable users.

Mobility Fittings

Inside the enclosure, a folding shower seat was fitted and grab rails were carefully repositioned to provide support exactly where needed. These fittings are a practical consideration for any elderly or vulnerable person using a bathroom independently.

Sanitaryware

The WC was replaced with an AKW Lorenza close coupled unit with a soft push button flush, chosen for ease of use. The basin and pedestal were upgraded to an Armitage Shanks Sandringham 21. New isolation valves were installed throughout for simple future maintenance.

Tiling

Tiling was completed in white 150mm x 150mm ceramic tiles, running to the ceiling in the shower area and to 1500mm height behind the WC and basin, creating a clean and bright finish.

The Result

The completed bathroom gives our customer the confidence to use the space safely every day, without relying on others. The anti-slip tray, thermostatic shower, folding seat and grab rails all work together as a practical, well-considered solution designed specifically for an elderly and vulnerable user.

The room feels clean, modern and easy to maintain, while still being designed around her specific needs. For her family, the peace of mind is just as important as the finished result.
