What was the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive)?

The Renewable Heat Incentive was a government financial incentive scheme designed to encourage the uptake of renewable heating among domestic consumers. The scheme ran from 2014 until its closure in March 2022, with the objective of significantly increasing the proportion of heat generated from renewable sources and helping the UK meet targets to reduce carbon emissions.

How did the Tariff work?

The domestic RHI paid tariffs per unit of heat generated, calculated on the basis of an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate). Tariff rates were contracted for a set period and payments were made on a quarterly basis.

Who was eligible?

Homeowners, private landlords, social landlords, third-party owners of heating systems, and self-build homeowners were all eligible. A commercial RHI was also available for non-domestic properties.

Who administered the RHI?

The scheme was administered by Ofgem, the government department responsible for regulating gas and electricity markets.

What replaced the RHI?

Since April 2022, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) has provided grant funding towards the cost of installing heat pumps and biomass boilers. Unlike the RHI’s tariff-based payments, the BUS offers an upfront capital grant. Contact us to find out whether your property qualifies.
