Important Notice: The Green Homes Grant closed to new applicants on 31 March 2021, having run for less than a year. The information below is kept for reference. If you’re looking for current government support for renewable energy, the scheme to look at now is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS).
What was the Green Homes Grant?
Launched in September 2020, the Green Homes Grant was a UK government scheme offering homeowners and landlords in England vouchers of up to £5,000 (or £10,000 for those on low incomes) towards the cost of energy-efficient home improvements, including insulation and low-carbon heating. The scheme was administered by the Simple Energy Advice service but closed prematurely in March 2021 due to high demand and administrative issues.
What has replaced the Green Homes Grant?
The Green Homes Grant has been succeeded by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), which launched in May 2022. Rather than vouchers for a range of improvements, the BUS focuses specifically on replacing fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives, offering upfront grants deducted directly from your installation cost.
Current BUS grant amounts:
- £7,500 off an air source heat pump
- £7,500 off a ground source heat pump (including water source)
- £5,000 off a biomass boiler (rural, off-gas-grid properties only)
The scheme is available to property owners in England and Wales and is expected to run until 2028. Unlike the old RHI tariff payments, the BUS grant is applied upfront – your installer deducts it from the final price before you pay.
Am I eligible?
You may be eligible if you:
- Own your property in England or Wales
- Are replacing an existing fossil fuel system (gas, oil, LPG or direct electric)
- Have a valid EPC (Energy Performance Certificate)
- New build properties are not normally eligible. The scheme does not cover the replacement of an existing low-carbon heating system.
